How to Remove Background Noise from Voiceovers Without Losing Voice Quality

Background noise—such as steady AC hum, computer fan whirr, or distant traffic—is the enemy of clear voiceover recording. While modern noise suppression tools can eliminate unwanted noise, over-processing voice tracks introduces watery phase artifacts, hollow midrange, and robotic sibilance. Achieving clean vocal tracks requires a balanced, multi-stage noise reduction approach.

The first line of defense is a Noise Gate or Downward Expander. A noise gate works by turning down the audio level when the signal drops below a specific threshold—effectively silencing background noise during pauses when no one is speaking.
