How to Edit Podcast Dialogue: EQ, Compression & De-essing Essentials

Producing a professional podcast requires more than just sitting in front of a microphone and speaking. Unprocessed vocal tracks often suffer from uneven volume spikes, boxy room resonance, and harsh 's' sounds that exhaust listeners over long episodes. Learning the fundamentals of vocal audio processing—specifically EQ, compression, and de-essing—is essential for any podcaster or content creator.

The first step in vocal post-production is subtractive EQ. Before boosting pleasant frequencies, clean up unwanted low-end rumble and room noise by applying a High-Pass Filter (HPF) set between 80Hz and 100Hz. A de-esser acts as a dynamic frequency-dependent compressor, attenuating only when sibilant spikes cross a set threshold. Place the de-esser after your EQ and compressor to ensure your voice remains crisp without sounding lisp-like or dull.
